Abstract

Neurodegenerative disorders involve the progressive degeneration of nerve cells, leading to cognitive, motor, and behavioral impairments. These conditions present significant challenges for individuals, families, and society, with rising prevalence and substantial economic burdens. Current treatments primarily manage symptoms, underscoring the need for more innovative approaches. Psychedelics, including psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), have shown potential as therapeutic agents due to their ability to enhance neuroplasticity, promote neurogenesis, and modulate neuroinflammation. While animal studies offer promising insights, translating these findings to human applications is complex and not linear, demanding rigorous research to confirm safety and effectiveness. Ethical considerations, accessibility, and inclusivity, especially for marginalized communities, are crucial as these treatments are being further explored. With comprehensive human studies, psychedelic therapies might offer promising avenues for addressing neurodegenerative disorders. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
