Abstract

Generating biohydrogen is a promising technology that could greatly influence sustainable energy. This process focuses on transforming organic materials, such as wastewater, agricultural byproducts, and food waste, into hydrogen gas. There are multiple methods to achieve this, including dark fermentation, photofermentation, and microbial electrolysis cells, which vary in efficiency, cost, and environmental effects. The efficiency of producing biohydrogen can be affected by several factors, including the type of substrate, pH levels, temperature, and any inhibitors present. For example, microorganisms usually thrive in neutral to slightly alkaline pH, so the pH of the solution is crucial for maximizing hydrogen production. One of the main challenges with biohydrogen production is that it is generally more expensive than conventional methods, mainly due to its high capital and operational costs. Optimizing the process could improve efficiency and make this technology more economically viable. This chapter contributes to a deeper comprehension in biohydrogen technology. © 2026 Elsevier Inc.
