Abstract

In the end, the learner should be able to: Describe physiological changes due to aging on mobility, balance, strength, and overall health. Learn how to develop appropriate and safe exercise programs tailored for the needs, preferences, and abilities of older adults. Understand the dietary needs of older adults and their role in maintaining proper nutrition and hydration. Learn to identify risks for falls and how to prevent them, including modifications to the environment and assistive devices. Focus on promoting autonomy, dignity, and respect in care for older adults by encouraging patients to participate in decisions about their self-care. Recognize the interrelationship of physical health with mental health and learn how to address specific issues such as depression and anxiety among older adults. Describe the implications of polypharmacy, appropriate administration of medications, and monitoring for adverse effects in older adults. Understand the principles of interprofessional collaboration to deliver comprehensive, holistic care addressing the multifaceted needs of older adult patients. Describe community resources and programs that promote physical self-care and overall wellness among older adults.
