Abstract

Biopolymer-based composites, particularly nanocomposites that integrate natural polymer matrices with nanoscale fillers, represent an innovative and sustainable category of materials with significant potential for biomedical applications. Their multifunctional capabilities allow various applications, including advanced drug delivery systems, wound healing, and tissue engineering. This review covers key biopolymers, including chitosan, cellulose, β-cyclodextrin, sodium alginate, starch, gelatin, pectin, collagen, and dextran, and their composites can be tuned through blending with natural and synthetic components to optimize their therapeutic efficacy. It also offers valuable insights into the development of biopolymer-based composites for future applications. We hope that this study will provide a comprehensive overview of biopolymer-based composites, improving their biomedical properties and pointing to a more sustainable and greener future. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
