Abstract

Evidence points toward a bidirectional relationship between headache and mental disorders. In many cases, especially chronic headaches, early diagnosis of comorbid psychiatric illness and proper treatment can play an important role in improving patient adherence to treatment and achievement of a better therapeutic outcome. This chapter reviews the relation between neurobiological and psychological factors and common types of headaches. Part of the chapter focuses on headaches in children and adolescents. It presents an overview of diagnostic approaches and treatment strategies, including pharmacological and psychological intervention, for headache in the presence of psychiatric disorders. Given the range of psychiatric comorbidities with headache, emphasis is placed on a collaborative approach and multidisciplinary treatment of patients with headache disorders. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
