Abstract

The shared nociceptive pathways of the ears, eyes, nose, neck, and head are the cause of headaches following painful disorders of these structures. When evaluating any new onset headache, every head and neck structure must be evaluated for primary ophthalmologic or ear disorders such as glaucoma, refractive errors, and acute otitis media. These might be the cause of a new onset headache or pain localized to the eyes or ear (less likely) may be the manifestation of primary headaches. After a toothache, headache attributed to a temporomandibular disorder is the second most common facial pain and are usually underdiagnosed and undertreated. Headache related to disorders of the nose or paranasal sinuses will be discussed. Headaches as a manifestation of rhinosinusitis, which is a precipitating factor of a primary headache and is often misdiagnosed as a migraine and as sinusitis, are main topics. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
