Abstract

Background: anxiety is the most prevalent psychological reaction in response to stress, and every person would experience it when facing life-threatening situations like invasive diagnostic techniques. One of the most widespread diagnostic methods and treatments of cardiac diseases is the cardiac catheterization which leads to increasing patients' level of anxiety Objective: The present study is done by the objective of defining to what extent Benson muscle relaxation would affect anxiety level in patients waiting for cardiac catheterization. In a clinical trial study 140 patients waiting for cardiac catheterization admitted in cardiac wards of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Tehran were chosen by availability method. They were randomly divided into two groups of control and experiment. Data collection instruments included individual information questionnaire, the paper of self reporting anxiety level. Moreover, the method of data collection was interview and patient's self reporting. At the beginning, an hour before cardiac catheterization, patients' level of anxiety and pulse rate in the two groups was reported. Then the experimental group asked to listen to a recorded tape of manipulating Benson muscle relaxation for 20 minutes by head phone, and immediately after manipulation their level of anxiety was measured and recorded again, while in control group just standard nursing cares were carried out, and their anxiety level and pulse rate was measured and recorded twice: once an hour before and once immediately before cardiac catheterization. Data analysis was done, using SPSS software vesion12 and statistical tests such as k2, fisher, Mann-whitney and Wilcoxon. Results The two groups were identical in terms of age, sex, anxiety level, and one hour before cardiac catheterization. After manipulating treatment patients level of anxiety was statistically decreased (p < 0.001), while this amount increased in the posttest of control group. Immediately before cardiac catheterization based on the findings of the present study, a considerable statistical difference was observed between the two groups level of anxiety (p< 0.001) Conclusion: according to the findings, Benson muscle relaxation would statistically decrease anxiety of patients awaiting cardiac catheterization and nurses could use this method to decrease anxiety of patients awaiting invasive diagnostic techniques. © 2015 AENSI Publisher All rights reserved.
