Abstract

1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) is utilized as a solubilizer in industrial applications. NMP is widely used as a penetration enhancer in pharmaceuticals and controlled-released systems. The acute toxicity of NMP is reported to be low; however, NMP is teratogenic, and high concentrations exposure to pregnant rats may lead to abnormalities in fetuses. Also, eye and skin irritation were observed in people exposed to NMP. Several in vitro and in vivo studies on NMP demonstrate that NMP has no genotoxicity activity. Since NMP is biodegradable and easy to recycle, its environmental pollution is low; hence, it is compatible with green chemistry guidelines. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
