Abstract

As one of the 2-substituted 5-nitrofurans, 5-nitrofurfuryl alcohol is utilized in human and animal medicines as antibacterial, antiprotozoal, and anthelmintic agents. It has demonstrated that the presence of the nitro group is essential to the therapeutic effects of 5-Nitrofurfuryl alcohol. The signs of acute exposure to 5-Nitrofurfuryl alcohol can be skin, lung, eye, and respiratory tract irritations in humans. Small doses of furfuryl alcohol stimulate human respiration, but larger doses decrease respiration, reduce body temperature, and produce nausea, salivation, diarrhea, dizziness, and diuresis. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
