Abstract

Background: Smoking is one of the most important health problems, and quitting it is important in lowering the rates of mortality, morbidity, and disability worldwide. Identification of the factors associated both with the onset of smoking and quitting it may be helpful to design intervention strategies. The current study aimed to investigate the characteristics of smokers attending smoking cessation centers. Materials and Methods: The current cross-sectional study was conducted on 266 smokers attending smoking cessation centers in Khuzestan Province, Iran. Data collection tools included a researcher-made questionnaire including sociodemographic information. The data were analyzed using t-test and Chi-square test with SPSS version 16. Results: The mean age of the participants was 38.9 years. The results showed that 46.6% of the participants smoked >20 cigarettes/day and 89.8% had a history of smoking for >5 years. There was a significant relationship between duration of smoking and age. There was no relationship between marital status and duration of smoking. In the current study, no significant association was observed between the educational level and quitting. Conclusions: The current study results can provide an insight into the factors associated with smoking and help to plan cognitive-behavioral interventions and cessation therapies. © 2019 MDPI AG.
