Abstract

Pimpinella anisum L., commonly known as aniseed, is an Apiaceae family member widely used in TPM. This essential oil-bearing plant has a hot and dry nature and is orally recommended for several neurological disorders, digestive problems, and respiratory diseases in TPM. It is also a liver tonic, galactagogue, and emmenagogue. The plant has rich trans-anethole in the volatile oil and caffeic acid derivatives in the extract. Clinical studies support the beneficial effects of the plant in migraine headache, functional dyspepsia, rhinosinusitis, IBS, and some gynecological problems. Also, preclinical studies confirmed galactagogue, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective properties of this plant. Due to stimulating effects on uterine, aniseed is contraindicated in pregnancy. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
