Abstract

Satar is a medicinal plant which corresponds to both Thymus species and Zataria multiflora. It has been used in TPM for various medicinal purposes including tonsillitis, mouth sores, eye cataracts, reproductive cough, toothache, sore throat, indigestion, dyspepsia, and bladder and uterus pain. It is topically effective for the treatment of painful joint swellings and children’s umbilical hernia. The effectiveness of T. vulgaris in facial skin wrinkles and dysmenorrhea has been proved in RCTs, while Z. multiflora has demonstrated promising activity on COPD, bacterial vaginosis, insulin resistance, denture stomatitis, as well as oral mucositis. The beneficial effects of these two species on memory, lung, gastrointestinal tract, and liver have been revealed during experimental studies, though no clinical studies have confirmed the mentioned activities. Allergic reactions have been reported from the internal and external use of thyme. Its use is contraindicated during pregnancy, but no information is available on the safety of thyme during breastfeeding. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
