Abstract

Lavandula angustifolia Mill. with common name of English lavender and Lavandula stoechas L. with common name of French lavender (Lamiaceae) are mentioned as valuable medicinal plants in TPM literature. Dried flower of lavender is used for cold-tempered neurological disorders, such as melancholy, epilepsy and seizures, muscle twitching, insanity and amnesia, obsession, and depression. Linalool and linalyl acetate are the main components of L. angustifolia essential oil, while fenchone and camphor are the major compounds in L. stoechas volatile oil. Apigenin, 7-methoxycoumarin, coumarin, caffeic, benzoic, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives are the most abundant phenolic compounds identified in lavender. Recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses revealed the efficacy of lavender aromatherapy with different doses and any form of application on anxiety and anxiety-related conditions. Oral administration of lavender oil, dried powder, or tea bag showed significant effect on decreasing mild to moderate depression. Moreover, lavender oil inhalation aromatherapy effectiveness on pain levels and improving sleep quality has been shown in some RCTs. Aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of L. angustifolia and L. stoechas also showed beneficial effects in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease and seizure. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
