Abstract

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an inert organosulfur compound, naturally present in plants, animals, humans, and even in the atmosphere above marine areas. Detectable levels of the compound are found in the body fluids like blood and cerebrospinal fluid performing a spectrum of biological effects as an antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and antiapoptotic. A variety of health benefits protect against ailments including interstitial cystitis, allergic rhinitis, chemoprevention, autoimmune diseases, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and scleroderma whether used on its own or in combination with other supplements. In this chapter, the health benefits of MSM are discussed based on recent scientific evidence. © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
