Abstract

Cumene is a liquid and volatile hydrocarbon with a gasoline-like odor. It is a flammable substance that is widely used in the manufacturing of resins, paints, and household products. Cumene exposure can occur through the work environment, environmental factors, cigarette smoke, and food consumption. Human exposure to cumene is most likely caused by inhaling contaminated petroleum products when they evaporate. The substance, at high concentrations, may cause effects on the central nervous system. Long-time contact with the skin may cause dermatitis and skin rashes. Cumene is readily and efficiently absorbed by inhalation, metabolized within the body into water-soluble compounds, and excreted without evidence of long-term retention. Currently, no information is available about cumene's chronic, reproductive, or developmental effects in humans, and there is limited evidence for its carcinogenicity. As the main subject, contact with cumene must be avoided at all costs. If an individual inhaled or ingested cumene, they must immediately be removed to the fresh air and referred to the medical center. In case of ingestion, vomiting must be avoided. In skin contact, the area should be washed with soap and rinsed with water after removing contaminated clothes. The cumene release into the environment occurs during the production and use of the substance and the combustion process of gasoline engines. Cumene is expected to exist entirely as a vapor in the air according to the gas and particle partitioning model for semi-volatile organic compounds. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
