Abstract

In recent years, the number of aged patients with esthetic or functional demands for orthognathic surgery has increased. Having complete or partial edentulous jaws is one of the main problems involving aged patients, which have influenced both technique and outcome of orthognathic surgery. The innovations in modern orthognathic surgery have demonstrated accurate and predictable outcomes in edentulous patients. Traditional treatment protocol of orthognathic surgery for edentulous patients using either a Gunning splint or patient’s denture as a splint had demonstrated some disadvantages, leading to reduction of the accuracy and predictability of the treatment. Nonetheless, implant-assisted orthognathic surgery has been introduced to have a comprehensive reconstructive treatment with more promising results. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
