Abstract

Aim and background: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a method used to examine body structures. This method has various complications. Different methods have been invented to reduce these side effects. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of dextromethorphan(DXM) gargling on analgesia and improving recovery after EUS. Materials and methods: After obtaining informed consent, patients are divided into two groups. One group was given DXM gargling before EUS and the other group was sprayed with lidocaine in their throat. EUS is performed for patients and analgesia and quality of recovery were checked during recovery. Result: Showed less sore throat, cough, and more ability to swallow saliva and patients' satisfaction of operation in the DXM group. However, the free-pain period(FPP) was higher in people receiving lidocaine. Conclusion: Compared with lidocaine, DXM gargling improves the quality of recovery and pain relief after EUS and could be used instead of lidocaine. https://fa.irct.ir/trial/64301, IRCT20200612047740N5. © 2023
