Abstract

As one of the fastest aging societies, Iran's elderly population requires special attention to health and treatment issues. The findings of the qualitative study showed that the elderly mainly rely on doctors, family members, and traditional media as the main sources of health information. However, several obstacles, including poor digital skills, limited responsiveness of medical staff, and lack of appropriate information resources, have made it difficult for them to access accurate and up-to-date information. In this regard, a set of practical solutions has been proposed, each of which, considering its specific capacities and limitations, can partially address this challenge. Increasing health programs in mass media is considered the fastest and most widespread method of intervention, which, of course, requires careful monitoring of the content produced. Distributing educational brochures in health centers is also a low-cost and short-term solution, although continuous updating of this content is essential. On the other hand, holding media literacy workshops, although requiring more investment, can lead to sustainable empowerment of the elderly. Strengthening the accountability of medical staff through specialized training and incentive systems, although accompanied by challenges, can increase the trust of the elderly in the health system. Developing public library services is also considered a complementary and long-term solution that requires interagency cooperation and continuous investment. Successful implementation of these solutions requires coordination between various institutions, including the Ministry of Health, the Iranian Broadcasting Corporation, the Welfare Organization, and local institutions. Also, allocating sufficient financial resources and continuous monitoring of the quality of program implementation are other key requirements. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
