Abstract

For the treatment of various types of cleft abnormalities, a variety of methods have been suggested. It should be noted that the treatment of these patients is not limited to reconstruction surgeries, but a multidisciplinary team including (and not limited to) a maxillofacial surgeon, plastic surgeon, orthodontist, otolaryngologist, speech therapist, psychotherapist, and so on should participate in all stages of treatment. Normal speech capability should be considered as the most serious success indicator in any treatment plan. Since facial deformity can be efficiently treated by surgery, whereas speech difficulties can often be irreversible, disruption in normal growth patterns should be avoided as much as possible, but not at the expense of impaired speech ability. To achieve the desired result, comprehensive care from infancy to adulthood is essential, so care team members must be actively involved in all stages of planning and treatment. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
