Thalidomide Reduces the Level of Nitric Oxide in Bleomycin Induced Pulmonary Fibrosis Model

Abstract

Introduction: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a disease with unfavorable prognosis with no effective treatment. Nitric Oxide (NO) may play an important function in the pathophysiology of the disease. In this project, the effect of thalidomide on serum NO level in a model of lung fibrosis was studied. Material and Methods: Sixteen male wistar rats in three groups were introduced in this experimental study. The first group had intra-trachea injection of bleomycin to obtain a fibrosis model, and thalidomide was given for 30 days as treatment. The other two groups received bleomycin and normal saline respectively. The level of Nitrite (NI, stable metabolite of NO) was measured. Results: The serum level of NI was reduced in the first group, and it was significantly different from other groups; group 11.79±0.58 ,group 2: 7.79±2.22 and group 3: 6.99±1.32 μmole/l, p<0.05. Discussion: Thalidomide may have an inhibitory effect on NO production which is helpful for the pulmonary fibrosis treatment. © Akademia Medycyny 2009.
