Abstract

This chapter will present a summary of the composition and characteristics of current resin-based dental composites. Each aspect of the composites will be discussed, first by describing the history of the development of the materials and subsequently by discussing recent and future areas of study. Indirect dental composites and resin-based cements will be briefly introduced. Recent findings identifying the successes as well as the current problems with dental composites, particularly the influence of the oral environment, will be highlighted and used to suggest future directions for research and development. © 2014 Woodhead Publishing Limited.
