Abstract

Background: Considering the role of personality in the etiology of IBS, this study aimed to comparison the brain-behavioral systems activity in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and healthy people. Methods: In a case-control study, a group of 160 people, 80 patients with IBS diagnosed by gastroenterologist and 80 healthy people were investigated. IBS patients were selected from two gastroenterology clinics in Esfahan. All subjects filled out Carver and White brain/-behavioral questionnaires. Data was analyzed by ANCOVA test. Findings: The ANCOVA analysis has shown that the activity of behavioral inhibition system in IBS patients is significantly higher than the control group. The score of behavioral activation system was higher in control group but the difference between groups was not significant. Conclusion: Our findings has shown that IBS patients tend to experience the negative emotions.
