Abstract

Fatty liver disease (FLD), known as a common cause of chronic liver disease globally, refers to a spectrum of disease-causing lipid accumulation in the liver. There are two types of FLD, including Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). The pathological spectra of these two diseases are similar TO a range of conditions from steatosis to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The diagnosis of FLD relays highly on clinical suspicion, laboratory tests, or diagnostic techniques. Despite advancements in understanding the pathophysiology of FLD, targeted therapies for the disease are still absent. Abstinence, nutritional support, and medications such as corticosteroids and pentoxifylline are used for the management of patients with ALD. The treatment modality for patients with NAFLD is mainly based on weight loss and adjutant management using specific agents such as Insulin sensitizers and Anti-oxidants and cytoprotective therapies. The aim of this study is to provide a thorough review of the current therapies and strategies regarding the management of ALD and NAFLD. © 2020 Lahore Medical And Dental College. All rights reserved.
