Abstract

Fish and other seafood are important sources of nutrients, but they are also sources of chemical contaminants that may cause adverse effects on human health. Fish consumption advisories are usually established by state jurisdictions, providing useful guidance for consumers to be protected against the fish contaminants threats. Fish consumption advisories determine the sources of contaminants as well as the level of a recognized fish species that an individual may eat during its lifespan with less harmful effect. A diet containing different types of lean fish and the other seafood is preferable for the majority of the population. However, women of childbearing potential and children should minimize the consumption of fish and other seafoods that have a high possibility of contamination. The aim of this advisory is to provide revisited information on risks associated with consumption of contaminated fish. Therefore, in this article a number of potential health threats from contaminants in fish with reference to the beneficial effects of fish consumption on human health are discussed. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
