Abstract

Chronic Respiratory Disorders (CRDs) are one of the main leading cause of mortality worldwide. Implementing advanced technologies including microfluidics offers promising advancements in diagnosis and treatment in this area. This chapter systematically explores the multifaceted applications of microfluidics in respiratory medicine, ranging from early diagnostics to therapeutic interventions. The initial chapters delve into the use of microfluidics for diagnosing chronic respiratory disorders, with an emphasis on liquid biopsy-based early cancer detection and the role of personalized medicine. Subsequent sections focus on lung disease modeling and drug screening, highlighting the utility of microphysiological systems in replicating various lung conditions, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis, and cystic fibrosis. The chapter also discusses the evolution of lung organ/organoids-on-a-chip as an intermediary between traditional cell cultures and in vivo models. Further, it examines advanced drug delivery systems (ADDS) facilitated by microfluidics, including the development of nanoscale drug carriers and the application of nanodrugs in lung disease treatment. The latter chapters cover wearable microfluidic devices for disease monitoring and drug administration and discuss the regulatory, commercial, and future directions of microfluidic applications in respiratory healthcare. © 2024 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
