Abstract

Emerging Pollutants are a group of toxins with low concentrations but substantial toxicity. These EPs are prolonged and unrelenting in the natural environment. They are particularly complex organic materials noticed in the water. Although the concentrations of these EPs in water are extremely reasonable, they have hypothetical impacts on the ecosystem and humans after being accumulated by individuals. Consequently, the problem of appropriately eliminating EPs from water has triggered huge attention. This chapter reviews various sources of emerging contaminants, their classification and associated health implications. A detailed discussion on EPs such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), flame retardants, endocrine disruptors Endocrine disruptors contaminants, Perfluorinated surfactants (polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFOS and PFOA), personal care products, disinfectants, pharmaceutical impurities thoroughly discussed. Additionally, an overview of existing EP removal techniques are presented. Understanding the point sources, their complexities and the usage of appropriate techniques will provide clean drinking water. The clean water supply significantly impacts the economy of developed and developing nations as it is responsible for the production rate of energy and food, the growth of industrialization, and the quality of the environment. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
