Abstract

A facile synthesis method leading to a new morphology for Cr2O3 nanoparticles, as spherical colonies reminiscent of Osage orange (Maclura pomifera), is reported. The nano sized Cr2O3 particles of 20–30 nm were then composited with MWCNTs using hydrothermal method. After systematic characterization of the Cr2O3 nanoparticles and Cr2O3/MWCNTs nano-composite by X–ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier–transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms (BET) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), their potential as an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst was studied. The Cr2O3/MWCNTs nano-composite showed remarkable ORR performance comparable to 10 wt% Pt/C catalyst. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
