Abstract

Facial transplantation is defined as a medical procedure aimed at replacement of all or part of a face using tissue from a donor. It includes the transplantation of multiple tissue types including bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and skin. In this chapter, in addition to reviewing the facial transplantations that have been done so far, we evaluate and characterize fundamental factors such as patient selection, ethical dilemmas, indications, contraindications, and complications. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
