Abstract

Persia (modern-day Iran) is one of the oldest inhabited regions in the world. Archaeological sites have shown human habitation dating back 100, 000 years to the Paleolithic Age with semi-permanent settlements established before 10, 000 bce. Some of the earliest records of history of Persian Medicine can be found in Avesta, the primary collection of sacred texts of Zoroastrianism. The practice and study of medicine in Persia has a long and brilliant history. Persian medicine (also called Unani medicine) is considered as one of few Whole Medical Systems, with certain basics, containing every component needed for a school of medicine. The Iranian academic centers like Gundeshapur University (3rd century ad) were centers for great scientists from different civilizations. These centers successfully followed their predecessors’ theories and greatly extended their scientific research through history. This chapter first talks about “Traditional Persian Medicine”, then we conducted a thorough search in Persian medicine ancient textbooks to find any comments on fenugreek. Fenugreek was found to have a long tradition in Iranian medicine and other regions, and possesses significant healing properties. Similar to other regions, in Iranian medicine fenugreek has been used in treating a wide range of diseases. We extracted, categorized, and analyzed various forms of fenugreek administration, any descriptions, different diseases for which fenugreek is proposed, side effects, the dosage, and any other related data of fenugreek in Iranian medicine ancient textbooks. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Dilip Ghosh and Prasad Thakurdesai, individual chapters, the contributors.
