Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and causes neuron death, which leads to memory loss and cognitive dysfunction. The aggregation of Aβ and the impairment of tau protein are the most famous mechanisms to explain the pathogenesis of AD. Pharmacological therapies with acetylcholineesterase inhibitors and N-methyl d-aspartate glutamate receptor blockers are used to treat AD. Saffron (Crocus sativus) is a medicinal plant and has been used to in traditional medicine for centuries to treat diseases. This chapter covers the prominent findings on the pharmacological/therapeutic properties of saffron on the central nervous system, specifically its application in the treatment of AD. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
