Abstract

Gene therapy and gene editing represent groundbreaking technologies with the potential to revolutionize medicine by correcting genetic disorders at their root cause. Gene therapy involves the introduction of genetic material into cells to replace or repair defective genes, while gene editing allows for precise modifications to the genome. These technologies can potentially cure diseases that were previously untreatable, offering hope to individuals and families affected by genetic conditions. By directly targeting and modifying faulty genes, gene therapy and gene editing hold the promise of providing long-lasting and even permanent solutions to genetic disorders. As research and development in these fields continue to advance, the possibilities for improving human health and well-being are truly limitless. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the principles, applications, and challenges of gene therapy and gene-editing techniques. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
