Abstract

Clove, the bud of Syzygium aromaticum, is an evergreen tree which is known for its special fragrance. In TPM manuscripts, clove is called qaranful in TPM with strong effects on neurological diseases, as well as oral cavity, including gum and teeth, gastrointestinal tract, and genitourinary system due to its hot temperament. Current clinical evidence confirms its therapeutic effects on anal fissure, premature ejaculation, drunkenness, mucositis, and hyperhidrosis. Preclinical studies indicate anxiolytic and antidepressant activity of clove, as well as memory enhancement, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective properties. Also, it has demonstrated gastroprotective, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and aphrodisiac activities in animal studies. No health hazards or side effects are known with the proper administration of therapeutic dosages of clove, but concentrated clove essential oil may irritate the mucosa and hence should be used with caution orally. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
