Abstract

Background: Resveratrol belongs to a large group of biologically active substances found in plants which classified as phytoestrogen because of its ability to interact with estrogen receptor. Several beneficial effects of resveratrol described in the literature involve cardio protective, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action. Conflicting evidence indicates the beneficial effects of resveratrol in treatment and prevention of diabetes complications. So we decided to explore them in this review. Methods: Related Articles from the database, Google scholar, PubMed, Scopus from 2000 to 2010 were searched. Conclusion: Several useful effects of resveratrol in prevention and treatment of diabetes were seen. However, almost all studies have been conducted in animals that regarding the possible effects in human similar studies have been proposed in them. © 2014, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences(IUMS).
