Abstract

Keratoconus classification has evolved over the past decades due to significant advancements in the diagnostic and management approaches. In the past, the path to keratoconus management was mainly limited to the advanced forms of the disease with typical clinical findings (Vogt's striae, Munson's sign, hydrops, etc.) and significant visual loss. The need to recognize more subtle or subclinical forms of the disease was neither appreciated nor needed because of the lack of effective modalities for halting progression or treating at the early stage, except for optical correction.1 This chapter reviews different classification systems currently available for assessing keratoconus severity based on historical and newer perspectives and tries to propose a new approach to classifying subclinical or suspect forms of the disease. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Mehrdad Mohammadpour and Masoud Khorrami-Nejad; individual chapters, the contributors.
