Abstract

Leg Calve Perthes Disease (LCPD) is a condition in which the blood supply of the femoral head is closed and as a result the bone temporarily dies. Depending on the severity of the disease this leads to irritability of the hip bone and finally the head of the femur is deformed. Various types of methods have been used to treat LCPD which are divided into operative and non operative methods; where in the non-operative method different orthosis are prescribed (Karimi et al. in Evaluation of the gait of subjects with avascular necrosis of hip joint: a study of long term orthotic use. Submitted to: Physiotherapy Research International, [1]). These orthosis are designed base on the idea of reducing the stress applied on the bone. To facilitate study of effect of different orthosis and their design parameters on the force applied to the bone; we tried to develop a mathematical model of such patients during walking. To this end a kinematic analysis is given here. The model is then verified by numerical simulation and comparison of the results with those obtained from experiments done by a Gait Analyzing System that uses QTM software to capture motions and Visual 3D software to derive the tests' data. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Singapore.
