Abstract

Objectives: We identified service attributes of HIS that are relevant to importance and performance of a Hospital Information System (HIS), and prioritized those that need management intervention. Methods: Following a shakedown phase in the HIS of a public hospital in Iran, we examined all available 57 registered nurses’ perceptions about importance and performance of the current HIS system along a set of attributes representing system quality, information quality, and service quality through a valid and reliable questionnaire. Using an importance-performance analysis, we identified and mapped those attributes that are main improvement priorities for management intervention and the ones that should be maintained in the developed HIS. Results: Our results showed that two system quality attributes (ease of use, ease of learning) should be maintained, and three of them (system reliability, response time, and the fitness of the system features to nurses’ work) should be improved in the newly developed HIS system. Conclusions: Our analysis may help hospital managers and software developers to divert resources, time, and energy from attributes that overkill resources to those that need more management attention. The implication for the hospital management is to focus on improving the technical aspect of the current HIS system. © 2019
