Abstract

Immunological disorders are diseases or conditions caused by a dysfunction of the immune system and include three main disorders: hypersensitivity, autoimmune diseases, and immunological deficiency syndromes. In recent genome-wide association studies the association between a number of risk loci and some immunological disorders has been shown. A growing body of data indicate that epigenetic modifications play important roles in the development and pathogenesis of immunological disorders, especially autoimmune diseases. New advances in epigenomics and epigenetics have provided novel insights into the pathogenesis of immunological disorders and the development of new agents. As a result of the major impact epigenetic and epigenomic studies have had on pharmacology, a new field of specialty, pharmacoepigenetics, has been developed to explore epigenetic markers for differences in drug responses. In this chapter we first describe an overview of recent epigenetic modifications involved in the pathogenesis of immunological disorders, and then elucidate their major roles in pharmacological and clinical applications. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
