Abstract

Objective: Surgical extraction of the mandibular third molar is one of the most common procedures performed by oral surgeons. Cutanplast is a novel gelatin sponge with a powerful haemostatic effect that is rapidly absorbed. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of Cutanplast on postoperative clinical outcomes. Methods: This study was conducted as a randomized single blind, split mouth study in the patients undergoing surgical removal of bilateral mesioangular impacted mandibular third molars. After the extraction, Cutanplast was packed in one side randomly. Post surgical swelling and pain levels were collected one day before, one day, three days and a week after the surgery. Results: SPSS statistical analysis showed a significant reduction in swelling on the Cutanplast side, but not a significant effect on the pain experienced by the patients after the surgery (P value = 0.672). Conclusions: Cutanplast appeared to be an effective and safe haemostatic sponge to relieve postoperative swelling. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to clarify the impact of it on post surgical pain and swelling. © 2020 Asian AOMS, ASOMP, JSOP, JSOMS, JSOM, and JAMI
