Abstract

Oral autoimmune disorders include recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), oral lichen planus (OLP), pemphigus (pemphigus vulgaris) (PV), and mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP). Investigating the pathogenesis and underlying mechanisms involved in such autoimmune diseases is of interest. Autoimmune disorders are accompanied by oxidative stress and excess production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). In this chapter, an overview of the mechanisms by which ROS/RNS are produced and the interaction of oxidative stress with immune responses is provided. In addition, biomarkers of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of oral autoimmune diseases, antioxidants, and related treatments for oral autoimmune diseases are discussed. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
