Coronary Artery Patterns in Neonates With Transposition of the Great Arteries in Tehran

Abstract

Background and purpose: Nowadays cardiovascular developments in pumping of heart-lung and improvements in anesthesia care, including intubation, have made early surgical intervention possible to correct life-threatening congenital anatomic abnormalities in patients of lower ages. This study was performed to evaluate the coronary artery patterns in neonates with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) in Tehran. Materials and methods: In this retrospective cross sectional study the patients were introduced for cardiac surgery after exact diagnosis of the type of heart disease. The records of 63patients with TGA were studied and status of the coronary artery location was considered. Data was analyzed using t-test and Chi-square and P<0.05 was considered as the significance level. Results: The results showed that the coronary artery was in normal status in 90.47%, while the prevalence of reverse perspective, intramural LAD and RCA single were found in 6.32%, 1.58% and 1.58% of patients, respectively. There was no significant correlation between coronary anatomy and complications after surgery, including patient mortality. Conclusion: The prevalence of unusual patterns of coronary arteries in neonates with great vessels of transposition was 9.53% which was found to be lower than the global rate (33.1%). Also, the rate of mortality in subjects with normal coronary was 8.7% and in those with abnormal coronary arteries was 33.4%. These rates were not significantly different from similar studies probably due to difficult nature of these cases surgical technique. © 2015 Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences.
