Abstract

Kidney and urinary tract diseases can occur in all people and at any age, including women, men, and even children. These diseases affect only a certain part of the body. In women, the urinary system is involved, and in men, the urinary system and reproductive organs such as the prostate will be affected. Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, cystocele, and kidney stone diseases are among the most common problems in this field. BPH is a process in which the normal cells of the prostate are enlarged, causing urinary retention. Dried fruits of Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens), by the inhibition of 5-alpha-reductase mechanism, has been used for the treatment of diseases since ancient times and has enough scientific documents. The active compounds of the barks of African palm (Prunus africana) inhibit the proliferation of fibroblasts and induce apoptosis in the prostate. The roots of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica), flowers of Star grass (Hypoxis hemerocallidea) and seeds of Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) are other drugs that are used in the natural treatment of this problem and have a lot of scientific and historical support. Kidney stone diseases are the most common urinary system problems. Shatavari roots (Asparagus racemosus), aerial parts of Stonebreaker (Phyllanthus niruri) and oregano (Origanum vulgare), the fruits of Barberry (Berberis vulgaris) and Black cumin (Nigella sativa), calyx of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), and stems of Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) are specific examples for treatment. Each of them treats this disease with its own ingredients and by different mechanisms related to these ingredients. © 2024 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston. All rights reserved.
