Abstract

1393 schoolchildren of different economic, environmental and nutritional status were skin tested to determine the tuberculous infection rate, the presence of atypical Mycobacterium and to ascertain a better way of tuberculosis control. It was found that as the age increases the infection rate as might be expected increases. Skin testing also showed atypical Mycobacterium infection are present in this area of Iran and cross sensitivity may occur in diagnostic skin testing. Because of low tuberculosis infection rate and sparsity of tuberculous disease in the area studied a child-centred programme was recommended as the mode of choice for tuberculosis control. © 1980 Oxford University Press.
