Abstract

The new headache classification system (ICHD-3) categorizes a new headache occurring for the first time in close temporal relation to a disorder of homoeostasis as a secondary headache attributed to such a disorder. This replaces the category of metabolic or systemic headache. Understanding the pathophysiology and association of a systemic illness to a headache help us considering serious, disabling, and occasionally life-threatening underlying systemic causes when we are evaluating de novo or worsened headaches without unnecessary headache evaluation in patients with underlying related conditions. In this chapter, we will discuss different types of headache attributed to disorders of homoeostasis. These include headache related to dialysis, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, as well as headache induced by drugs. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
