Abstract

Matricaria chamomilla L. (chamomile) flower has a hot and dry nature and is well known for its anti-inflammatory effects both in traditional medicine and phytotherapy. In TPM, chamomile is recommended orally and topically for the treatment of headache, eye pain and conjunctivitis, visceral pain, muscles spams, neuropathic pains, and uterine problems. Also, chamomile oil can be used topically as an analgesic and muscle relaxant. Clinical studies demonstrated several therapeutic properties of chamomile including in anxiety, insomnia, migraine, carpal tunnel syndrome, menstruation problems and menopause, dermal and internal inflammation, and mucosal damage. Chamomile is used in the forms of decoction, infusion, topical compress, topical oil, or as different extracts for these indications. Since the plant has a long history of use by humans, it is demonstrated to have a relatively acceptable safety, though some cases of allergic reactions to chamomile are reported. It should be considered that chamomile may potentiate the efficacy of anticoagulant drugs and thus should be used with caution in concomitant use with these medicines. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
