Abstract

Fenugreek with the scientific name of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. is an herb that is widely used in cooking and as a traditional medicine. It is considered a hot and dry plant in TPM, and both its leaves and seeds are medicinally important. It can be used externally and as a topical medication or orally. In TPM, fenugreek is an important medicine for gynecological disorders, respiratory problems, and dermatological conditions. Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of phytoestrogens. Clinical investigations have also demonstrated the beneficial effects of fenugreek seeds in gynecological problems including PCOS, menstrual disturbance, and dysmenorrhea, as well as type 2 diabetes mellitus, respiratory problems, and improvement of sexual function. Moreover, there are preclinical evidences on the pharmacological activieies of fenugreek, including on retinal degeneration in diabetes, lung injury, and hepatoprotective effects. Caution should be considered due to its potent antihyperglycemic effects as well as high mucilage content, which can affect the pharmacokinetics of conventional medicines. © 2024 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
