Antioxidative Protective Effects of Cinnamomum Zeylanicum and Vaccinium Myrtillus L. on Dna Damage and Myeloperoxidase Activity in Petrochemical Industry Workers

Abstract

Nowadays it is clear that the adverse effects of some chemicals like mercury on health are related to the formation of free radicals. Oxidative stress may be the result of a state in which excessive reactive oxygen species defeats body antioxidant protection and as a result, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, protein modification and some other effects may occur. Medical plants have been long known as natural sources of antioxidant compounds which can protect organisms against oxidative stress. This study was performed to examine the antioxidative beneficial effects of Vaccinium myrtillus and Cinnamomum zeylanicum on 25 male workers in a petrochemical factory and were exposed to mercury. In the serum, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, myeloperoxidase, total thiol molecule, total antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation were measured. For the analysis of the data, paired t-test and the Pearson correlation analysis were applied. A decrease in lipid peroxidation and 8-OH-dG were observed after administration of the infusion. Also, a decrease in myeloperoxidase was observed after the administration of the infusion but these decreases were not significant. Due to its flavonoid compounds, the oral administration of the infusion may be useful for the protection of the petrochemical workers against the toxic effects of mercury mediated through oxidative stress. © 2015, Scibulcom Ltd.
