Abstract

Many underlying vascular, neurogenic, neuroinflammatory, and trigeminovascular activation mechanisms have been hypothesized for migraine headache. Weight management, improved gut health, adequate micronutrient intake, and low glycemic and low-fat/high omega-3 diets can improve migraine headache by suppressing neuroinflammation. Weight reduction can ameliorate migraine headache symptoms in all age groups. Adequate fiber, low saturated fat intake, and avoiding overconsumption can improve gut microbiota health and can reverse gastric stasis and constipation, which are reported to be linked with migraine. Probiotic supplementation could reduce the duration and intensity of migraine attacks. Migraine triggers such as hypo/hyperglycemia and dehydration could be managed by proper nutritional habits. This chapter discusses dietary treatment options for migraineurs. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
