Abstract

Limonene is a monoterpene frequently found in the essential oil of citrus. d-limonene is the isomer used in food, cosmetics, and other manufactural industries. This monoterpene is mainly known for its antioxidant and anticancer properties. d-limonene is considered non-toxic, but prolonged exposure to d-limonene can cause skin irritation and sensitization. LD50 for oral toxicity was 5g/kg and 6g/kg for rats and mice, respectively. Other toxicity like renal, hepatic and neural toxicity has been observed in animal studies, but it is rarely known for humans. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
