Abstract

Piperonyl butoxide is a synergist that is added to several pesticides, including pyrethrin, carbamate, rotenone, and pyrethroid. Piperonyl butoxide is metabolized by microorganisms in soil and degraded in the environment in approximately 8h. The toxicity of piperonyl butoxide is related to the inhibition of mixed-function oxidases and resistance esterases. This pesticide has low acute toxicity, and the liver and kidneys are the primary targets in long-term toxicities. Piperonyl butoxide has acute and chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
