Abstract

Stem cells are cellular subsets with developmental and regenerative functions with a wide range of differentiation potency, ranging from totipotent stem cells capable of differentiating into extra- and intra-embryonal lineages to unipotent stem cells with variable sources of retrieval. In contrast to the early developmental stages, adult tissues possess a limited regenerative potential, negatively affecting the rehabilitation and recovery of patients. The therapeutic application of stem cells in regenerative medicine is an area of great potential and has been investigated in a variety of pre-clinical and clinical studies, ever since the first reports of stem cell administration in the 1950s. In this article, an introduction to stem cell therapy and the administration of stem cell subsets in regenerative medicine in pathological conditions has been discussed. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
